HELP GULF COAST OIL SPILL WILDLIFE RECOVERY
Brooklyn boutique to donate a portion of proceeds from sales of "WTF Pelican" necklace to National Wildlife Federation
BROOKLYN, NY – June 16, 2010: Honey & Hazel, a new gift boutique in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, is teaming up with one of its Brooklyn-based designers, Metal Sugar, to aid wildlife affected by the Gulf Coast oil spill. From today through July 31, Honey & Hazel will donate a portion of proceeds from all sales of Metal Sugar's "WTF Pelican" necklace to the National Wildlife Federation, which is working to protect the more than 400 species of wildlife impacted by the disaster, including the brown pelican.
Metal Sugar's WTF Pelican necklace ($70) is a gold-plated copper hand-stamped charm that was originally designed as a funny statement necklace. A part of designer Melissa Cohen's stamped animal pendant series, which also includes a fish pendant stamped with "TACO," a Dachshund stamped with "WEINER" and a horse stamped with "HAY," among many others, Cohen says that the playful acronym "WTF" was "literally the only thing that I thought could work on this necklace."
Little did Cohen know how foretelling the WTF Pelican necklace would prove. With an estimated 50 million gallons of crude oil - perhaps more - now leaked into the Gulf, and no real relief expected for the immediate future, heartbreaking images of oil-drenched pelicans and other devastated sea life have continued to emerge, including on the cover of this week's Time magazine.
The necklace is available in yellow, white, black or rose gold plating. A variety of chain lengths are available from 18 inches to 28 inches. For consumers who would prefer a phrase other than "WTF," custom stamping is available for an additional fee.
